Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The powers set up a 3x vs. 1x vs. 1x. The gentlemen had a different idea for how the match would go. It was only DD1, but Emily got the clue above it right and then went elsewhere.
The FJ! clue had me grateful for a mulligan as I had the wrong drink on the first try in picturing the wrong bottle. Fortunately, the clue had a key place name to get me on the right track.
3/3 for big tallies on the scoreboard made for a nice start to the week.

Instaget FJ. A pretty well-played game if you ignore the first two FJ wagers.

Considering the leader didn't cover from a similar spot the last time he played, I can't really fault second from going all in, and I can't really fault third for thinking second would go big—and go small as a result of that.

Coryat: $31,800
46 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: writer's cramp, fruit, hemoglobin
Green glass bottle was enough to seal the deal in FJ!, but Georgia is a nice extra bit of confirmation.
The litter/litter box distinction seemed a bit ticky-tack, especially after the leniency on Rolls and Royce.
I agree with two of the three times Stuart decided to go all in.
Janissary was a really good get by Emily.
I lost the Gruyère/Emmenthaler coin flip.

Sprinkles are for winners.

A well-played game for the most part. I went wrong on the Swiss cheese DD. Knowing that tal means valley in German, I immediately went to Emmenthaler. Easy-peasy FJ.

Negged "Medical Conditions" $1000 with "Carpal Tunnel". Anybody else? Grrrrr...

Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
This is an excellent question to which I have no good answer. Your row of question marks and exclamation points is completely warranted. As soon as Emily's response was revealed, I put a dent in my forehead. I didn't even need the confirmation from Ken to know that a) it was correct, and b) this could easily be a triple get.
My first thought when I saw the clue was Heineken. I knew that was a bad fit given the Georgia TOM (even if they meant Tbilisi) and it should have been easy to pivot away. Especially since I'd correctly identified the TOM. But somehow I got stuck. The best alternative I could come up with was Rolling Rock which was at least American, albeit way up in Latrobe, PA. But I knew it was a post-Prohibition product. So I ruled it out and reluctantly stuck with Heineken. And no, I wasn't just somehow focused on beer. I knew that would be a bad move and started brainstorming any product--drink, food, cleaner, whatever--that came in a green glass container. I think maybe that had me imagining a more vivid green and my subconscious rejected Coke on its own authority without sending the suggestion to the front office.
Mrs Penguin, who also pre-called Coca-cola fared no better. She ended up guessing Perrier.
So... I dunno. Maybe there was something in the water and the beer chez Penguin last night. We'll have to wait until tonight's game to see if the duh has worn off.
Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
The constant repeating of the full Category Title is getting tiresome. I understand TPTB have asked them to do this, but it's ridiculous. Why do they make them say "Dogs & Cats Living Together" when "Dogs & Cats" would clearly be sufficient? I can see the first time, or maybe even switching categories, but when you stay in the column, let it go!

Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Man, that's a great guess. Asked to choose between your response and the correct one, I'd have gone with yours because it sounds German and the clue said the cheese came from Fribourg. Adding in the "tal" definition just clinches it. They're even basically the same cheese. My recipe for Swiss fondue calls for Emmenthaler or Gruyère. I've made it with each and have never noticed any difference.
Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
This. Very much this. TPTB need to get rid of this directive pronto. Plus what can they do if the contestants just ignore the request?astrohip wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2023 10:25 am The constant repeating of the full Category Title is getting tiresome. Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
She did the same for DD3 in the cheese category. I don't think most players get such an advantage from bouncing, though they don't seem to realize it. At least she bounced to the middle of categories, not getting near the bottom and then skipping to the top of a new one, as others do...MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 1:25 pm The powers set up a 3x vs. 1x vs. 1x. Re: Monday, November 13, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Don't they "advise" players not to bounce? and folks don't listen to that....alietr wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2023 11:44 amThis. Very much this. TPTB need to get rid of this directive pronto. I can't say I've even noticed the category calling, though. As long as they get thru all the clues, I don't care.
