Like the last couple years, this thread will list notables who will leave us as we go through 2024.

German soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer, aged 78, January 7. (2 archive hits!) He is the only defender to win the Ballon d'Or (player of the year) twice (1972 and 1976), and one of only three men to win the World Cup as both a player (1974) and as a manager (1990). (The other two were Frenchman Didier Deschamps in 1998 and 2018, and Brazilian Mario Zagallo in 1958/62 and 1970.) In the famous Monty Python "Philosopher's Football Match" sketch, Beckenbauer was the only actual football player on either team ("Beckenbauer, obviously a bit of a surprise there", says the announcer when reading the lineups).

Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

0 hits in the J-Archive, a real shame. Trixie Norton has 3 however.

Mary Weiss, lead singer of the 1960s girl group The Shangri-Las. She doesn't appear by name in the archive, but the group's signature song "Leader of the Pack" appeared five times in either a J! answer or question.

Beatrix Potter, author of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit."

...OK, she died in 1943, but the New York Times has just got around to running her obit, in a series called "Overlooked No More."

Melanie, singer-songwriter of 1971's "Brand New Key" (aka "The Rollerskate Song"), made famous in Boogie Nights, among other films. She was 76, and performed at Woodstock at the age of 22.

At least two Archive hits that I can find, including an Audio Daily Double in the early John Ryan game 4 from '87.

This one hurts bad. Archive hits:

#9018, aired 2024-01-17 THE FIST & THE FURIOUS MOVIES $600: This Carl Weathers boxer is told, "Finish (that) bum, & let's go home"; he does not finish that bum
#8330, aired 2021-02-05 FROM THE GRIDIRON TO TV $1000: A member of the Raiders in the 1970s, this Rocky Balboa foe also played himself on "Arrested Development"
#6201, aired 2011-07-25 IN GOD'S NAME $400: Carl Weathers played this boxer who slugged it out with Rocky
#962, aired 1988-11-08 "ACTION" $300: Recent movies about Detroit policemen include "RoboCop" & this film starring Carl Weathers

But then, there's the Andrew He meme-referencing Final response from the Masters tournament:

Do dish, somebody.
I keep meaning to post this, but last week I did the simple trick of Googling and it's a Carl Weathers line from Arrested Development.
